The 2017 Honda Civic Type-R recently made its global debut at the 87th annual Geneva International Motor Show. The Type-R shares fundamental components with the standard Civic hatchback, but it has been engineered from the ground up to deliver the most rewarding driving experience in the hot-hatch segment, both on the road and the racetrack.
Compared to the earlier generation Type-R, the all-new Type-R features a more comprehensive aerodynamic package. It includes a smoother underbody, front air curtain, a lightweight rear wing, and vortex generators at the trailing edge of the roof. The Civic Type-R’s muscular body is designed to provide a best-in-class balance between lift and drag, which contributes to greater stability at high speeds.
The 2017 Honda Civic Type-R is powered by the same 2.0 L VTEC TURBO ‘heart’ four-cylinder engine as the earlier generation Type-R, but it has been refined and optimized to produce 306 horsepower and 295 lb.ft.torque. With optimized engine control settings, the throttle response and driveability have been vastly improved. The engine is exclusively paired with a six-speed manual transmission with rev matching control system. The system ensures that there is no compromise to the Civic Type-R’s intimate and rewarding connection with the driver.
Chassis and Handling
The standard Civic hatchback already has a light and rigid body. However, Honda engineers used additional adhesives in key areas to increase the torsional rigidity by 38 percent over the earlier Type-R. The front MacPherson strut suspension from the standard Civic hatchback has been revised with new geometry to reduce torque steer and maximize the hot hatch’s sporty handling characteristics. At the rear, the multilink independent suspension setup from the standard Civic hatch has been improved with the use of unique and highly rigid suspension arms.
The driver has more control in the new Type-R than the earlier model with the enhanced choice of driving modes. The modes consist of comfort, sport, and +R. Depending on the selected driving mode, it tailors the hot hatch’s adaptive dampers, steering force, gear shift feeling, and throttle response on demand.
Pricing and Availability
Production of the 2017 Honda Civic Type-R will start this summer at Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) in Swindon, the global manufacturing hub for the 10th generation Civic hatchback. When the Civic Type-R goes on sale in the U.S., it will become the first ever Honda-badged Type-R model to be officially sold here. Pricing for the new Civic Type-R has not been announced yet, but based on the competition, expect it to start around the $30,000 mark.
