For decades, the European driving enthusiasts have enjoyed seat time behind the wheel of some of the most desirable sports cars and sedans available in the auto industry, while we, the American gear heads, only got a small sampling of the performance available across the pond. With the introduction of the 2016 Audi S8 Plus and the RS 7 Performance at the 2015 LA Auto Show, we, the American gear heads, will finally be able to drive some of Europe’s finest performance machines on our soil.
For 2016, the Audi S8 Plus replaces the standard S8, which made “only” 520 horsepower and 418 lb.ft. torque. Fortunately, the new S8 Plus will start at the current S8’s starting price of $115,825.The S8 Plus will be the only short wheelbase model available in the 2016 A8 lineup, as Audi has decided to drop the A8 in favor of the A8 L, which has a five-inch longer wheelbase. With software tuning and higher turbo boost pressure, the 4.0 L twin-turbo V8 now produces 605 horsepower and 516 lb.ft. torque (with a overboost function, the torque output temporarily rises to 553 lb.ft.). The 2016 Audi S8 Plus also adds Matte gray paint and new, 21-inch wheels at no additional charge.
The 2016 Audi RS 7 Performance starts at $129,925. The RS 7 Performance will not replace the standard 560 horsepower RS 7. This new trim adds the same upgraded 4.0 L twin-turbo V8 found in the S8 Plus, which produces the same 605 horsepower and 517 lb.ft. torque (with 553 lb.ft. torque available for brief periods with the overboost function). The RS 7 Performance includes standard features like Dynamic Package, which adds carbon-ceramic brakes, sport exhaust, carbon fiber lip spoiler, and the top speed governor is raised to 190 mph. The Black Optic exterior package adds various gloss-black body panels and carbon fiber exterior mirror caps.
Both of these packages are also available on the 2016 Audi S8 Plus. On the S8 Plus, the Dynamic Package adds $11,000 to the S8 Plus’s base price, while the Black Optic exterior package adds another $550.
A fully loaded 2016 Audi RS 7 Performance will max out around $142,000, while the 2016 S8 Plus maxes out around $151,000.
