Over the past few decades, Volvo has built a strong reputation when it comes to building a rock solid station wagons. Unfortunately in America, automobile consumers would rather have a high riding SUV or a CUV than a sporty, low-to-the-ground station wagon. So, to cater our market (and China to a certain extent), Volvo decided to raise its mid-size V70 station wagon, give it some mild offloading capabilities, and cover its lower half and undercarriage with some plastic cladding and skid plates. This conversion resulted in the birth of the XC70 or the V70 Cross Country (as it was known when it launched in the early 2000s).

Since then, the XC70 has been a real success for Volvo in the U.S. as it perfectly blends the practicality of a station wagon with the high riding seating position of an Sport Utility Vehicle. The current generation of the Volvo XC70 has been in production since 2008 and in 2014, it received a mild mid-cycle updates with some new exterior and interior features. For 2015, the Volvo XC70 remains unchanged when compared to the 2014 models. So, without any further delays, it is time to checkout all the latest features and options in the 2015 Volvo XC70, shall we?

Today, we are checking out the top-of-the-range 2015 Volvo XC70 T6 Platinum AWD. The engine in this car is a turbocharged 3.0 L in-line 6 cylinder engine which produces 300 horsepower at 5600 RPM and 295 lb.ft. of torque at 2100 RPM.

All of the power is routed to all four wheels via Volvo’s permanent all-wheel-drive system with Instant Traction and a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission.

Combined, the engine, transmission and the four-wheel drive system propel the 4,008 pound 2015 Volvo XC70 to 60 mph from 0 in a respectable 6.9 seconds. The EPA rates the 2015 Volvo XC70 at 17 mpg in city and 24 mpg on the highway, which is right in the ballpark when compared to other mild offloading vehicles with 6-cylinder engines.

Size wise, the Volvo XC70 is shorter in length than the new Toyota Highlander. But, it is wider and maybe taller than the current Honda Crosstour. To be exact with the dimensions, the Volvo XC70 is 63.1 in tall, 190.5 in long, 73.9 in wider and the wheelbase is 110.8 in long.

However, don’t let these exterior dimensions fool you because when you step inside, there is ample head, shoulder, and knee room for both front and second row occupants. Up front, the headroom measures in at 38.8 inches, the shoulder room is 54.7 inches and the leg room is 41.9 inches. In the second row, the measurements are as follows; rear headroom is 38.6 inches, the shoulder room is 56.5 inches and the leg room is 34.6 inches.

So, if you are six-foot or taller, then you have ample room up front, but you might feel a bit cramped in the back seats. However, if you are less than six feet tall, then you will fit in comfortably in either front or back seats. Also, based on the rear seat shoulder room dimensions, there is ample space for two adults and a child, but putting three adults across the row for a long journey might become a bit inconvenient.

Behind the back seats, there is enough space to store two medium size suitcase or a week full of groceries. But when you fold the second row seats flat, then the cargo capacity increases to a generous 72.1 cubic feet, which is more than enough to carry small to medium furniture from IKEA.

When it comes to fuel tank capacity, all Volvo XC70 models are fitted with a 18.5 gallon unit which can be filled with regular unleaded gas, which is quite interesting for such a high output, turbocharged six cylinder engine. Thanks to its 24 mpg highway ratings, the 2015 Volvo XC70 T6 has a cruising range of 400 or more highway miles, which again, is very acceptable for a vehicle weighing more than 4000 pounds.
