The Volkswagen Golf hatchback is THE poster child for the company. Worldwide, the Golf is known as the go to hatchback and over the years, it has established a strong, cult like following. Now, the seventh generation of the Golf is here and it looks like it will continue the tradition established by its six predecessors.
Compared to the MK I Golf, the MK VII Golf is larger, more powerful, luxurious, safe, practical, comfortable, and economical. So, how good is the new Golf?, well, compared to the last generation, this one almost feels like a luxury car and not an entry-level, practical hatchback for the masses.
With the goal of streamlining the vehicle’s lineup in the U.S., Volkswagen sells the Golf TDI only with four doors. But, the consumer does have the choice to choose between three trim levels with varying amount of standard and optional features. The Golf TDI is also available with two transmission, and sends power to the front wheels.
The heart of the Volkswagen Golf TDI is a turbocharged 2.0 L I-4 diesel engine with 150 horsepower @ 3500 RPM and 236 lb.ft torque @ 1750 RPM. Depending on the consumer’s taste, the engine can be backed by a standard six-speed manual or a $1,100 optional six-speed dual-clutch automatic with manual shift mode.
With the DSG, the EPA rates the Golf TDI at 31 mpg city and 45 mpg highway. With a full tank of diesel, the Golf has an estimated highway cruising range of 500 miles.
Brakes are power assisted, dual circuit, 11.3 inch vented front disc and 10.0 inch solid rear disc with anti-lock braking system.
Suspension up front is a strut-type unit with lower control arms, coil springs, telescopic dampers and 22-mm anti-sway bar, out back there is a torsion beam with coil springs and telescopic dampers.
Wheels on the base S model is 16-in steel wheels, but on the mid-level SE trim, it is replaced with 17-in alloy wheels. The range topping SEL trim is fitted with 18-in alloy rims.
The new seventh generation Volkswagen Golf has grown marginally compared to the sixth generation. This growth spurt has resulted in a more luxurious, spacious and refined interior and there is ample space for four adults or two adults and three children.
The wheelbase is now 103.8 inches long, the length is 167.5 inches, the width is 70.8 inches, and the height is 57.2 inches tall. The passenger volume is 93.5 cubic feet and the cargo volume is 22.8 cubic feet.
The front head room is 38.4 inches, the rear head room is 38.1 inches. The front shoulder room is 56.9 inches and the rear shoulder room is 53.9 inches. The front leg room is 42.1 inches and the rear leg room is 35.6 inches.
Options and Packages
Depending on the trim levels, the Volkswagen Golf TDI can be optioned with features like panoramic roof, 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, heated seats, and rear view camera.
The seating upholstery in the base S model is cloth, but the SE and SEL seats are covered in “leatherette” or faux leather.
The base S and the mid-range SE trims are fitted with a manual, single-zone “climatic” climate control system. The top-dog SEL is fitted with a dual-zone automatic “climatronic” climate control.
Regardless of the trim level, the Volkswagen Golf TDI can be fitted with the Lighting Package ($995) which includes Bi-Xenon headlamps with Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS). The Driver Assistance Package ($695) includes park distance control with front and rear proximity sensors, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control.
Safety and Conveniences
The 2015 Volkswagen Golf comes fitted with a host of standard active and passive safety features to keep the occupants safe.
Active safety features in the car consist of Anti-lock braking system (ABS), Anti-slip Regulation (ASR), brake override system, electronic stability control (ESC) with electronic differential lock (EDL), electronic brake pressure distribution, engine braking assist (EBA), and hydraulic brake assist (HBA),
Passive safety features in the Golf include automatic locking retractors (ALR), crash-optimized front end and pedal controls, dual-stage front airbags for the driver and passenger, driver knee airbag, front side airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags among other features.
Additional safety features include child safety locks on rear doors, immobilizer III theft-deterrent system, intelligent crash response system (ICRS), and tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).
The 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI is currently available for purchase at your local VW dealer. The base S 4-door TDI model’s starting price is $22,345. The mid-level SE starts t $25,895, and the range-topping SEL starts at $28,395.
After selecting the Lighting Package and the Driver Assistance Package, a fully loaded SEL Golf TDI 4-door maxes out at $30,085.
