The Volkswagen Golf hatchback is THE poster child for the company. Worldwide, the Golf is known as the go to hatchback and over the years, it has established a strong, cult like following. Now, the seventh generation of the Golf is here and it looks like it will continue the tradition established by its six predecessors.

Compared to the MK I Golf, the MK VII Golf is larger, more powerful, luxurious, safe, practical, comfortable, and economical. So, how good is the new Golf?, well, compared to the last generation, this one almost feels like a luxury car and not an entry-level, practical hatchback for the masses.

With the goal of streamlining the vehicle’s lineup in the U.S., Volkswagen sells the Golf TDI only with four doors. But, the consumer does have the choice to choose between three trim levels with varying amount of standard and optional features. The Golf TDI is also available with two transmission, and sends power to the front wheels.

The heart of the Volkswagen Golf TDI is a turbocharged 2.0 L I-4 diesel engine with 150 horsepower @ 3500 RPM and 236 lb.ft torque @ 1750 RPM.  Depending on the consumer’s taste, the engine can be backed by a standard six-speed manual or a $1,100 optional six-speed dual-clutch automatic with manual shift mode.

With the DSG, the EPA rates the Golf TDI at 31 mpg city and 45 mpg highway. With a full tank of diesel, the Golf has an estimated highway cruising range of 500 miles.

Brakes are power assisted, dual circuit, 11.3 inch vented front disc and 10.0 inch solid rear disc with anti-lock braking system.

Suspension up front is a strut-type unit with lower control arms, coil springs, telescopic dampers and 22-mm anti-sway bar, out back there is a torsion beam with coil springs and telescopic dampers.

Wheels on the base S model is 16-in steel wheels, but on the mid-level SE trim, it is replaced with 17-in alloy wheels. The range topping SEL trim is fitted with 18-in alloy rims.

The new seventh generation Volkswagen Golf has grown marginally compared to the sixth generation. This growth spurt has resulted in a more luxurious, spacious and refined interior and there is ample space for four adults or two adults and three children.

The wheelbase is now 103.8 inches long, the length is 167.5 inches, the width is 70.8 inches, and the height is 57.2 inches tall. The passenger volume is 93.5 cubic feet and the cargo volume is 22.8 cubic feet.

The front head room is 38.4 inches, the rear head room is 38.1 inches. The front shoulder room is 56.9 inches and the rear shoulder room is 53.9 inches. The front leg room is 42.1 inches and the rear leg room is 35.6 inches.
