After a five-year hiatus, Tanner Foust, a 3-time U.S. RallyCross Champion and 2-time Formula Drift Champion returns to the drift scene in 2015 for three events in a Volkswagen Passat mid-size family sedan.

However, the Rockstar Energy/Nitto Tire-sponsored Volkswagen Passat driven by Tanner Foust has almost nothing in common with the Volkswagen Passat models parked on your local VW dealer lots. But, the drifting Volkswagen Passat does share the same body shell as the standard Volkswagen Passat, so that is some good  news for VW Passat enthusiasts.

The most powerful engine in the regular Passat is a 3.6 L V6 with 280 horsepower and 258 lb.ft. of torque. All of the power is routed to the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Unfortunately, the power output from the V6 engine and the drivetrain setup are not sufficient enough to qualify according to the Formula Drift regulations for 2015, so Foust’s Volkswagen Passat is a lot more powerful.

How powerful you ask?, well, it makes 900 horsepower thanks to a 450 cubic inch V8 with 700 horsepower and a nitrous system which is good for an additional 200 horsepower. All of this power is routed to the rear wheels via a race prepped, four-speed, dog-type sequential transmission.

In order to keep the car and the driver planted to the ground while going sideways, the drift-spec Volkswagen Passat is fitted with RS-R custom coil-over suspension setup, Recaro race seats, a custom roll cage, a huge APR Performance wing and Nitto NTO 5 tires.

Up front, the Nitto tires are wrapped around a pair of 17 inch lightweight rims, while out back, the tires are wrapped around a pair of 18 inch lightweight rims, which gives this drift-spec Passat a very aggressive stance.
